Technical Session
Practical Application of Variable Frequency Drives
This session provides an overview of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) in HVAC systems, focusing on installation, programming, electrical requirements, and sensor selection. It also addresses pump selection for variable speed operation, including turndown limits, pump and control curves, efficiency matching, parallel pumping with lead/lag control, and how differential pressure sensor location impacts system performance. The presentation concludes with a brief hands-on VFD demonstration showing real-time setup and control response.
Speaker
Kyle Wefing
Engineering Manager
R.L. Deppmann

Kyle Wefing is the Engineering Manager for R.L. Deppmann. He joined the company in 2017 as a Sales Engineer and has been in the HVAC industry for over 15 years. One of his accomplishments was earning the Hydraulics Institute Pump Systems Assessment Professional certification in 2019. In his free time, he enjoys snowboarding, traveling to see friends, and spending time with his family.
Dinner Program
Inside the VFD: Power, Control, and HVAC Applications
This technical presentation provides a practical and theoretical overview of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and their role in modern HVAC and hydronic systems. Attendees will explore the fundamentals of three-phase motor operation, VFD power conversion stages (rectifier, DC bus, and inverter), and the voltage-to-frequency relationship used to control motor speed and torque.
Speaker
Matt Farley
Sales Development Manager
Danfoss Drives

Matt Farley is a Sales Development Manager at Danfoss Drives, specializing in HVAC and Water/Wastewater applications across North America. He works closely with consulting engineers, contractors, and system designers to support drive selection, harmonic mitigation, and variable-speed system design for complex commercial and industrial projects.
